A voyage around Spitsbergen’s north coast is probably the most popular choice for first time visitors to the islands and with good reason. The scenery is dramatic and there are good chances of seeing a variety of wildlife including reindeer, seal, walrus, polar bear and huge numbers of nesting birds.
During this itinerary, historical sites from the whaling era are visited along with the village of Ny Alesund, which for years has played a role in polar research and exploration.
Certain departures also offer a programme for a maximum of 20 experienced dry-suit scuba divers, allowing them to dive in the kelp beds of north Spitsbergen. The kelp offers protection for sea anemones, sea cucumbers, shrimps and other bottom-dwellers and is a fascinating place to dive – many species of jellyfish, fish and diving seals and seabirds near the sea ice may also be observed.
